An alternate history of humankind is shown by the viral site of Independence Day: Resurgence

Are you up with the world history according to the alien war of 1996?

Many years have passed since the humankind was close to annihilation, fictionally speaking of course. I'm talking about the war of 1996 waged against aliens in the first Independence Day movie. Now the sequel is upon us and there is a lot to catch up so we can have a better insight into the universe of Independence Day: Resurgence this summer.

The viral site called "War of 1996" features the tagline "United we survive", concept embraced by humankind to get by from the aftermath of the alien destruction in the world. The site looks appropriately techy, showing a full screen animated globe and an interactive timeline.

As you move along the dates, the globe rotates and displays what happened on that year with images and videos narrated by our beloved President Whitmore (Bill Pullman). 

You can see in the player below the viral promo video about the War of 1996, it is kind of a trailer of the site.

Here is a breakdown of the events that occurred during 20 years since the aliens arrival leading up to Independence Day: Resurgence.

1996. Arrival & Attack.

On July 2nd, 1996 a massive alien mothership entered the Earth's orbit deploying 36 City Destroyers to annihilate the world's largest cities. The threat was eliminated thanks to a coordinated counterattack.

You can see the attacks per day marked on the globe in cool animations.

1997. The world rebuilds.

Aliens have been neutralized aside from a small area of African Congo. Cities and monuments are reconstructed, slowly restoring the world to it's glory.

March 1998. Leaders Unite.

President Whitmore and other leaders create unprecedented global unity.

Standing next to President Whitmore (Bill Pullman) is the former UK prime minister Tony Blair, former Russian president Boris Yeltsin, former German chancellor Helmut Kohl, and former French president Jacques Chirac.

May 1998. ESD Formed.

The UN creates the Earth Space Defense program (ESD) to serve as an early warning system and united global defense. The ESD launches a worldwide recruiment campaign.

1999 F-22 adds Alien Tech.

Alien shield technology is applied to an F-22 Raptor to create full Hybrid Fighters.

2000. Ruins of Las Vegas.

This tourist destination serves as a reminder of aliens' ruthless attacks.

2001. Congo ground war.

A small faction of aliens continues to hold out in the African Congo and are hostile to the ESD. It says it will take 5 more years to resolve the conflicts in this region.

2003. Alien weaponry adopted.

US army adopts alien weaponry for military application, this creates controversy.

2005. Alien prison rumors.

Rumors of a top secret alien prison below Area 51 start to gain traction with general public. This raises questions as to what happened to the captured aliens following the War on 1996.

2007. The World Mourns Col. Hiller

While test piloting the ESD's first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the ultimate death of Col. Hiller. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and son Dylan.

We will certainly mourn you Col. Hiller.

2009. Moon Base Operational.

ESD Director David Levinson presides over the ribbon cutting ceremony of the openinf of teh Earth Soace Defense Moonbase, the first of several planetary bases.

2011. Consumer Tech advances.

At the annual TEDx Conference, David Levinson highlights some of the breakout products inspired by alien technologies such as touchscreen smartphones, bladeless fans, drones and airport security scanners. 

As you can see, Jeff Goldblum is like the Steve Jobs of the Independence Day universe.

2013. Pres. Lanford Elected.

Elizabeth Lanford is sworn in as the 45th President of the US, becoming the first woman to hold the Oval Office.

You can see in the image that General Grey became president between Whitmore and Lanford.

2014. Next Gen Hybrid Fighter.

One of the standouts in this new generation of hybrid alien vehicles is the T4 Clobal Defender Hybrid Fighter, boasting unprecedented speed, maneuverbility and offensive capabilities.

February 2016. Presidents' Day.

President Lanford unveils a portrait of President Whitmore, honoring his valor and leadership to unite the world and lead humanity to a brighter future. 

July 2016. 20 Years of Global Unity.

The world has rebuilt stronger and we must continue working together to secure the human race, "For as long we stay united, we will survive". The picture reveals spacial stations in the Moon, Mars and Rhea Moon in Jupiter with the status: Online.
