Action film 'Hardcore Henry' is like a first-person-shooter game full of adrenaline

Hardcore Henry is full of bonkers action with melee combating, grenade tossing and even a silent main character, which is you (the expectator) for the way the movie is told, just as every first-person-shooter videogame: in first-person point-of-view.

The wild and fast action scenes gave me a feeling of the 2006 Crank, where Jason Statham can't stop moving and fighting the whole film. Also reminds me of games like Call of Duty, Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Assassin’s Creed and Bioshock.

When watching the trailer and reading the plot synopsis out of context, you can't tell if they are from a videogame or a movie. It is actually a movie told the way many games are! Like the very first scene of the trailer, it resembles the beggining of a videogame storyline:

- Your about to have your head cut off on a chopping block ("Skyrim"), your crashing in an airplane ("Bioshock") and your getting shot in the head ("Fallout: New Vegas"), after which you somehow survive and embark on a blood and action-filled quest to seek vengeance on those that did this to you and to find out why and how you were saved. The film was directed by Russian filmmaker Ilya Naishuller, and it's starred by Haley Bennett (The Equalizer), Sharlto Copley (District 9) and Tim Roth.

Every once in a while, a film will come along that will help ‘re-invent’ a particular genre for a new generation. I believe that Hardcore has a solid shot at pulling this off. - Ilya Naishuller

Hardcore Henry started life as a short. A proof-of-concept clip wowed folks on the Internet over a year ago. Here's the short by Ilya Naishuller that inspired Hardcore:

Director Ilya Naishuller mounted a crowdfunding Indiegogo campaign to finish the post-production, where it raised over $250,000 back in December of 2014. Here is a secene of the movie before postproduction.

After a high-profile showing at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2015, STX Entertainment picked up the worldwide rights to the film for $10 million. At the time, the film was simply called “Hardcore” but was renamed “Hardcore Henry” after STX became involved.

The movie was primarily shot with modified GoPro cameras to recreate the camera view so prevalent in the medium’s first-person shooter subgenre. That means the camera is constantly shaking, swooping and bouncing as the stunts and fights assault the screen in rapid succession.

So if you like first-person-shooter videogames, enjoy action films and are eager for new ways of film storytelling, this is a must see.
